A Time in which I fell in love with rambling shoes.

Bear with me on this ramble.  (because I may have been a) sleep deprived, b) tipsy c)tomatoed or e) all of the above)

Traveling is kind of like Nutella. If you grow up without it, you don’t know what you are missing, so there is no drive to seek it. But once you’ve had it, oh boy, there is no forgetting the sensation.

Maybe its because I’ve never really traveled anywhere before this, or because I love the familiarity of my home, of knowing the island and province so well. I am a re-reader of books, I enjoy the comfort of knowing how the movie will end, I am resistant to taking that initial leap of faith required in leaving the security of the already explored.

I am discovering, that everywhere there are places as beautiful and as welcoming as home. That for every person who avoids eye contact or won’t give you directions there are people who will open their homes and hearts to strangers, who will lend you their phone to make a call, or translate, or get you to your train and keep you company for the rest of the ride.

That for every venue where only 10 people show up, there are venues packed full of people who insist on 3 encores and will buy so many CDs you have to go back to the car twice for more merch.

In the past week we’ve gone to Denmark for Beers, hotdogs and Ice-cream, just because we could. Played one night at an underground dance club in Berlin, the next in a Brauhaus in Brandenburg that was basically a time machine, complete with servers in Dirndls, the proprietors in 16th century peasant garb, and Rye Beer (the brewing of Rye Beer was outlawed in the 1700s because the rye was needed for making bread)...

(And at this point I must have got distracted and went off to have a drink with the boys, and so I have no idea where I was going with all of this. but I thought I should share it anyway) -a

Where to start?

Right now I’m in Borger in the Netherlands. It has been a whirlwind of experiences and now we only have a few more days before we fly to the UK. The days are all starting to blend together, and all of us are having a hard time keeping track of what gig was where, and when each adventure happened.  I would blame my lack of updates entirely on the finicky internet connections here but really, its been so full tilt, and there has been too much to do to stop and type it all up.

Weird fact about Germany. NOBODY drinks the tap water. Its perfectly good water, but because the German word for tap water is “plumbing water” there is a resistance to drinking it. So everyone drinks bottled water carbonated or “natural” that basically tastes like tonic water without the bubbles.  Servers and hosts must think we are crazy because we have been insisting on tap water, and have started bringing water bottles everywhere and just filling them up in the bathroom since sometimes we can’t convince them to serve it to us.

So photos, because there are too many things to tell and not enough time!
