Better late than never right? Here are a few of the promised resources from last week, and some of the stuff we'll be working on looking forward into next week. I'll have extra copies of the basic charts at class. Heads up that it will be shoes off in the hall starting this week so If you can bring a pair of slippers your feet will be happier! (This saves having to wet mop the entire floor at the end of each class, we can do a sweep and spot clean...) NIFPA VIDEOS
Cowboy ResourcesThank you Colleen for the harmony suggestion on this one! it worked great, so we'll learn those next week, take a listen to the recording to get a jump start on it. The recording below has the full road map, but some of the chords may change in the Westphalia Waltz.
Lead Sheet & lyrics
I hear you playin' some great solos!Great work on improvising on I hear you talking. Your riffs are sounding great! over the next 4 sessions we'll be building up the length of our solos by sewing smaller riffs together into 4 and 8 bar lengths. One of the best things you can do to practice this is to build a vocabulary of riffs in the Key of D, either using notes from the D Major Pentatonic, or D Major Scale OR any notes that sound good to you when the chords are played behind it. Each time you pick up your instrument try to review the riffs you put together yesterday and add one or two new ones. Listen to the riffs and see if any sound like they would work as a call and response to each other, practice switching back and forth between them. There are some great riffs in the recordings below! Check 'm out and see if you can 'lift' bits of them
If you are interested in learning more simple swing tunes feel free to download and print my intro to swing guitar book below. It has a collection of tunes that start with 2-3 chords & shapes and progress up to Jazz with a Capital J

April 17 Meeting Room April 24 Tsolum Building Hi Everyone, Here are some practice tracks for Mariposita.... I am not a native spanish speaker. Lets say that again. I'm not fluent in Spanish in any way I am doing my best to break things down to make them manageable, but if you know someone who can help with more than the basics that is awesome. There is a one track with instruments and singing, one with me speaking into the mic trying to sound like I know what I'm doing. I think I'm pretty close?
Foreshadowing for next week....Yes, I'm a wee bit jetlagged/need a post vacation vacation. But I also really want to play some tunes with you all and get a start on some Cubanified sounds.
Tsolum Building. 7:30-9-15pm See you there! ALi Hey Folksies Great work last night folks, here are a bunch of MP3s to help with practice while I'm away. Also, check out the new tune I Hear You Talking by Cindy Walker. Practice track at 'tempo-de-learno' those chord changes go by fast so the more time you spend on them the easier they'll get.
Go slow! have faith! your fingers WILL make these chord changes. We will be adding harmonies, working on the next step of improvising and some "twin" fiddle/accordion western swing style soli parts when I get back.
HI Folks. Your very belated resources and information and updates are FINALLYYYYY here. I did get them done friday, but murphys law, they were replacing the internet hookups on my street friday. I'd like to thank you for your patience with my scattered resources and responses over the last few months. Things have been going well with Frazer's recovery but the everyday emotional tole is something that creeps up and disrupts things until even the thought of looking at an email inbox is panic inducing. So, I'm gonna keep on, till I find the time to get the rest of the resources done. In the meantime, thanks for being such a fun and awesome group of musicians to work with.
In doing the recording for more love I settled into an arrangement that we'll use as a starting point, and as always we'll build on it and adapt it to the group. I think that I'll be changing one chord in the box chart, but I'm going to make you all help me with that this week, more ears are better than one.
Marcus Mosley Workshop For those who are interested there is a great Gospel singing workshop and concert happening in Port McNeill April 6-8. We've already got 5 folks from Folkhamonic confirmed! I'm so excited. Road Trip! The cost is $70, for adults and is free for Kids and teens. If you would like a billet, please let me know as soon as possible (if you already requested one then you're covered!) The workshop starts Friday April 6 around 6:30pm, which gives time to get there (2.5hrs drive) and will be finished Sunday afternoon, with time to drive home. The workshop is being put on by WildHeart www.wildheartmusic.org which is a non-profit music program that has been bringing free choir lessons and vocal workshops to the youth of the North Island since 2013. In April 2012 after giving a performance in her home town of Port McNeill, singer/songwriter Georgia Murray was approached by many children expressing their desire to learn to sing or play an instrument. After discovering that music programs had been removed from the schools due to district wide budget cuts, Georgia and Deborah Murray along with members of the Port McNeill community had the idea to start a music program on the North Island that would be free to kids ages 5 to 18.

It was first recorded in the musical film On the Avenue (1937) by Dick Powell and Alice Faye. Les Brown's instrumental version, arranged by Skip Martin and recorded in 1946 as Columbia #38324, became a million-seller and Billboard top ten song in 1949.That same year vocal group The Mills Brothers also had a chart hit with their version on Decca #24550. Although not strictly a Christmas song as the lyrics make no mention of the holiday, the tune has been recorded for many artists' Christmas albums and is a standard part of the holiday song repertoire in the U.S. There is an amazing variety of performances of this song on youtube, all you need to do is type in the title of the song and start exploring! I had a hard time choosing just the six below!
Bring Me Sunshine - Practice trackThis track follows the arrangement that we worked out in class, see if you can play all the way through with it following your road map!
Talk 'n Tunes - December 12thI'll be the feature artist on December 12th, if you're around come check it out. (I may brag about you guys... Fair warning!) Here's a very interesting break down on one of the chords we hear all the time, it has a fancy name (Minor 7 b5!!!!) But once you listen to this you'll be able to recognize it every where. Merry Christmas! |
